Vegetation databases need taxonomic references to map their content unambiguously, consistently and with up-to-date taxonomic names. In observational databases many names occur that do not appear in traditional taxonomic checklists like aggregates, non-established species, crop plants, hybrids, etc.

For vegetation databases different plant groups (vascular plants, mosses, lichens, algae) have to be combined.

For Higher plants the Euro+Med PlantBase, a successor of the Flora Europaea project, provides an on-line database and information system for the vascular plants of Europe and the Mediterranean region, against an up-to-date and critically evaluated consensus taxonomic core of the species concerned. It integrates and critically evaluates information from Flora Europaea, Med-Checklist, the Flora of Macaronesia, and from regional and national floras and checklists from the area as well as additional taxonomic and floristic literature.
